Dalai Lama
12" x 12", acrylic on canvas (ORIGINAL)
Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, was born Lhamo Dhondup on July 6, 1935, to a farming family in Taktser, northeastern Tibet. Recognized at the age of two as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama, he received an extensive Buddhist education and became Tibet’s spiritual leader, assuming political responsibilities while still a teenager. Following the 1959 Tibetan uprising and conflict with Chinese authorities, he fled to India, where he has lived in exile in Dharamsala and has worked to preserve Tibetan culture while advocating dialogue and nonviolence. In 1989, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his nonviolent efforts concerning Tibet. He relinquished his formal political role in the Tibetan government-in-exile in 2011 and has since focused primarily on spiritual teaching, compassion, interfaith understanding, education, and dialogue between Buddhism and modern science.
