Big Rock Lessons
12" x 36", acrylic on gallery canvas (ORIGINAL)
The indigenous legend of the Big Rock offer's life lessons and a great story to share.
The legend of Big Rock, also known as the Okotoks Erratic, is deeply rooted in the cultural heritage of the Blackfoot people. It tells the story of Napi, the supernatural trickster, who, after giving away his buffalo robe to the Big Rock, was pursued by the rock itself. Napi's friends, including bats, helped him by colliding with the rock, causing it to break into two. This tale serves as a cautionary story about the consequences of taking back what has been given away and the importance of respecting the wishes of others. The legend is a testament to the Blackfoot's connection to the land and their understanding of the natural world.
