Robert Munch’s book “The Paperbag Princess” is one of my favourites from childhood. I always felt that I was the princess and the world my dragon.

She didn’t wait for shiny armour or perfect timing. In a dress made of nothing but courage and paper, she followed the scorched footprints to the edge of the world and knocked on the cave with her knuckles. “Hey, Dragon!” she called, voice bright as flint. Out rushed heat and thunder—smoke swirling gold, sparks skipping like fireflies—until his terrible roar emptied into a wheeze.

When the bragging was burned out and the air went quiet, she smiled—clever, unruffled—and the whole sky seemed to soften from blue to honey. This painting catches that exact breath between fear and wit, when a girl outsmarts a legend and discovers her truest armour has always been her own bright, blazing self.
